Cleaning Sports Equipment

No matter what sport you play, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that “equipment, such as helmets and protective gear, should be cleaned according to the equipment manufacturers’ instructions to make sure the cleaner will not harm the item.” They also recommend daily maintenance of all items that have direct contact with your skin.

Good advice! We all know that bacteria is the main source of odor. Once bacteria has begun to multiply, it grows fast – doubling every 15 minutes. Bacteria can be a serious health hazard to any athlete if it isn’t treated properly. Of course you should always dry your equipment immediately after use, but dirty gear may sit in the trunk or in a pile, hamper, locker or sport bag for several days still wet with sweat?

Maintaining athletic equipment means properly cleaning thus preventing the need for odor removal. This can be accomplished for apparel by using a premium sport cleaning detergent in the wash machine or for sports gear with specialized cleaning agents in a sink. These products are designed to remove sources of odor like soil, sweat and bacteria leaving behind a bonded antimicrobial barrier for long lasting “stink” protection.

New technology has been added to specialized detergents and cleaners to provide for long lasting antimicrobial protection on gear, apparel and footwear. OdorBalance® has created a one-of-a-kind line of products that is used by professional equipment managers. These premium cleaning and odor eliminating products are available right now for you to use in your own home.

There are services that offer one time cleaning gimmicks, but the bottom line is as soon as you use it again, your sports gear starts developing that breeding ground for bacteria. What’s your odor tolerance? Only you and your family know how often cleaning is necessary. One time a year treatments may not get rid of odor for a whole year. For the same price an expensive one-time ozone treatment costs you can take care of all of your sports stuff at home. Start fresh without the foul smells of yesterday. Be odorless, healthy, and clean!

Drew Westervelt who plays lacrosse professionally for The Chesapeake Bayhawks in the summer and The Philadelphia Wings in the winter says, “Odor Balance has proven to be invaluable in keeping gear from unwanted odors.”

How to protect military uniforms and gear from odor

So you’re out in the desert, in a jungle or flying a special ops mission. Taking a shower or washing your shoes or clothes is not always a planned event. Days can go by before you have time pay attention to personal hygiene. When that day finally comes, all you have a bucket, some water and some sort detergent. Well if you had some time to prepare, here’s what you can do to protect yourself from sweat smelling up your clothing, stinky foul smelling gear and shoes that emit a nasty odor.

First:
Pre-wash all of your new and used clothes with OdorBalance LaundryPro before you leave. Our product will not only remove any existing odor but it will provide a bacteria shield preventing odor from returning. Take a small bottle with you to use on location for increased protection on your tours.

Second:
If you have used shoes or boots follow our simple directions and dip them in a OdorBalance Offense and then in OdorBalance Defense (long lasting protector) before you leave. Offense will remove the odor and its causes (bacteria and mold) and Defense will protect them from odor returning.

Third:
Treat your new protective gear topically with OdorBalance Overtime (Long Long Lasting Odor Protective Spray) or dip in OdorBalance Defense for thorough coverage of porous material.

Beating the Odds

I wanted to share my story about what happened at the 5K Warrier Dash in Budds Creek, Maryland last weekend. Four of my friends suited up in our gear for a new challenge, but it ended up being much more. Recently my friend’s wife found out she has breast cancer, and it became more personal. We made up shirts and called ourselves Team B.R.A.S.. This acronym was the first letter of each of our first names coincidentally: Brian, Roy, Aaron and Steve. We finished in 1hr and four minutes and were proud to have contributed to St. Judes…so much fun. Roy’s wife Belinda just had surgery last Thursday. Our prayers are with her. A local company OdorBalance™ selling long lasting odor protection and cleaning products met with us after the run and committed to sponsor us moving forward in our future races like this as well as our cycling ventures. I already used the LaundryPro detergent to wash my shoes and clothes. Product works great. Can’t wait for July when we all run the Rebel Race.

P.S. Steve wasn’t intentionally trying to grab my butt… it just looks like that.
